Brandy Clark

Brandy Lynn Clark, born on October 9, 1975, in Morton, Washington, began her musical journey playing guitar at nine and singing in school musicals. Influenced by country-pop and traditional country artists, she pursued higher education, earning an associate degree from Centralia College in 1997. She then moved to Nashville in 1998 to attend Belmont University’s music business program, where she refined her songwriting and performing skills. Upon graduation, a job with Leadership Music led to her publishing deal, setting the stage for her career as a professional songwriter.

Clark quickly rose to prominence as a songwriter in Music Row, co-writing hit songs for several notable country artists. In 2011, she co-wrote “Mama’s Broken Heart” with Shane McAnally and Kacey Musgraves, which was recorded by Miranda Lambert and became a No. 2 hit on both the Billboard Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts in 2013. Her collaboration with McAnally and Trevor Rosen also produced The Band Perry’s No. 1 hit, “Better Dig Two.” Her songwriting style is characterized by observational pieces about everyday life, often incorporating dark humor and realism, which critics have widely praised.

In 2013, Clark launched her solo artist career with the release of her debut album, “12 Stories,” which peaked at No. 28 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. She made her network television debut on “The Late Show with David Letterman” performing her single “Stripes” in 2014. Her subsequent albums, “Big Day in a Small Town” (2016), “Your Life Is a Record” (2020), and “Brandy Clark” (2023), have continued to garner critical acclaim and multiple Grammy nominations. In 2014, she won a CMA Award for Song of the Year for co-writing “Follow Your Arrow” and her 2023 self-titled album earned her first Grammy for Best Americana Performance for “Dear Insecurity” featuring Brandi Carlile. In 2023, Clark also co-wrote the music and lyrics for the musical “Shucked,” earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score and winning a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music.
