Vanishing Twin was established in 2015, with Cathy Lucas leading the group on vocals and guitar. The band’s formation brought together a core trio, including Valentina Magaletti on drums and Susumu Mukai on bass. Magaletti’s prior work includes collaborations with Bat for Lashes and Gruff Rhys’ Neon Neon project, while Mukai is also known as Zongamin. The band’s name, Vanishing Twin, references the fetal absorption of Lucas’s twin during pregnancy, a personal detail that informed the group’s identity. From its inception, the band aimed to integrate diverse psychedelic traditions, drawing inspiration from global musical styles such as tropicalía and kosmische rock.
The group debuted their sound with the release of their first album, “Choose Your Own Adventure,” in 2016, through Soundway Records. This was followed by the EP “Dream By Numbers” in 2017. Their discography continued to expand with “Between Magic & Machines” in 2018. The second full-length album, “The Age of Immunology,” was released in 2019 on Fire Records, marking a new phase in their recording career. The band maintained this momentum, releasing “Ookii Gekkou” in 2021, and then “Afternoon X” in 2023, both also under Fire Records. Vanishing Twin has cultivated a sound described as a blend of Brazilian psych-jazz, psychedelic, and experimental pop. Their musical approach has been compared to that of the band Stereolab, particularly in their synthesis of varied influences into a cohesive experimental pop style.
Throughout their career, Vanishing Twin has actively engaged with both recording and live performances. Their consistent output of albums and EPs demonstrates a sustained creative process and a commitment to exploring their experimental sound. The band’s releases have been recognized within the music industry for their unique sonic qualities and thematic depth. Their work represents a steady progression in experimental music, building a catalog that reflects their stated mission of synthesizing diverse musical traditions. These efforts have solidified their position in the contemporary experimental music scene.
