Charlotte Gonin, known professionally as Vitaa, was born on March 14, 1983, in Mulhouse, Alsace, France. She grew up in Lucenay and was influenced by a diverse range of music, from French variety artists like Jacques Brel and Francis Cabrel to soul music by Marvin Gaye. Vitaa began performing small concerts at age 15 and, after completing her bachelor’s degree and a BTS in international commerce, worked in retail in Lyon before moving to Paris. Her stage name, Vitaa, is inspired by her great-grandmother’s name and the Italian word for “life.” She met Akos, who became her official composer, and began recording in a professional studio.
Vitaa’s career gained initial traction in 2000 when Dadoo convinced her to sing choruses for “Pas à pas” and “Oublie,” which received radio play. She subsequently collaborated with various artists, including Dadoo on “Sur ta route,” Mafia K’1 Fry on “Mytho,” Rohff and Jasmin Lopez on “Bol d’air,” Nessbeal on “Peur d’aimer,” and Sinik on “Ne dis jamais.” Her major breakthrough came with the song “Confessions nocturnes” with Diam’s. In 2007, as the first artist signed to Motown France, Vitaa released her debut solo album, “À fleur de toi,” which achieved number one status in France. The music video for the title track was filmed in Montreal, Quebec. She opened for Rihanna’s Last Girl on Earth show in Paris.
Vitaa released her second solo album, “Charlotte,” in 2023, named after her birth name. This album addressed themes of motherhood and self-acceptance, featuring the song “Ton amoureuse” about her and her child. “Charlotte” was released on October 6, followed by the video for “Je n’oublié pas” on October 26. She performed this song at the 25th NRJ Music Awards, where she was also awarded Francophone Female Artist of the Year. Her discography includes several successful albums such as “Celle que je vois” (2010), “J4M” (2017), and “VersuS” (2019) with Slimane, which sold over 1,000,000 units.
