Weezer, an American rock band, was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1992. The band has maintained a consistent lineup since 2001, consisting of Rivers Cuomo (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Patrick Wilson (drums, backing vocals), Brian Bell (guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), and Scott Shriner (bass guitar, keyboards, backing vocals). After signing with Geffen Records in 1993, Weezer released their self-titled debut album, also known as the Blue Album, in May 1994. This album achieved multi-platinum sales, supported by popular music videos for singles like “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Buddy Holly,” and “Say It Ain’t So.” Their second album, Pinkerton (1996), initially faced mixed reviews and lower sales but later gained cult status. The band went on hiatus following the Pinkerton tour, during which founding bassist Matt Sharp departed.
Weezer made a comeback in 2001 with the Green Album, introducing a more pop-oriented sound and new bassist Mikey Welsh. This album was a commercial success with singles like “Hash Pipe” and “Island in the Sun.” Following Welsh’s departure due to health reasons, Scott Shriner joined as bassist. The band continued to release albums, including Maladroit (2002), which featured a hard rock sound. Make Believe (2005) marked a significant milestone with its single “Beverly Hills” reaching number one on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart and the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100, earning the band their first Grammy nomination. The Red Album (2008) featured innovative elements and its lead single, “Pork and Beans,” topped the Modern Rock Tracks chart for 11 weeks and earned a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video.
Over the years, Weezer has experimented with their sound across various albums, including Raditude (2009), Hurley (2010), Everything Will Be Alright in the End (2014), and the White Album (2016), which received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. In 2019, they released the Teal Album, an album of covers that achieved commercial success, followed by the Black Album. Their recent works include OK Human (2021) with an orchestral pop sound, Van Weezer (2021) with a hard rock influence, and the SZNZ series of EPs (2022). Weezer celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Blue Album in 2024 with a tour and a “Super Deluxe Edition” release, demonstrating their enduring presence in the music industry with over 35 million albums sold worldwide.
