White Denim is an American rock band that originated in Austin, Texas, in 2006. The band’s musical style incorporates elements from dub, psychedelic rock, blues, punk rock, progressive rock, soul, jazz, and experimental rock. Their approach to music involves home-based recording, jamming, looping, and unusual song structures. The initial lineup formed from members of two bands, Parque Touch and Peach Train, playing together in March 2005. After a change in members and name in February 2006, the power trio began performing in the Austin local music scene while recording their distinct sound in a 1940s Spartan trailer. The band consists of James Petralli (vocals, guitar), Steve Terebecki (bass guitar), Michael Hunter (keyboards), Cat Clemons (guitar), and Matt Young (drums).
The band self-released their first EP, “Let’s Talk About It,” in 2007. They followed this with a nine-song “tour EP” called “Workout Holiday” selling only at shows. These early efforts led to a deal with netlabel RCRD LBL, resulting in the re-recorded “RCRD LBL EP” released in early 2008. White Denim gained recognition with awards like “Best New Band” at the 2008 Austin Music Awards. Their debut album, “Workout Holiday” LP, released in June 2008, featured re-recorded tracks and new material. The band signed with UK record label Full Time Hobby for European releases and later secured their first US record deal with Downtown Records, enabling broader distribution of their albums.
Throughout their career, White Denim has released numerous albums, including “Explosion” (2008), “Fits” (2009), and “D” (2011). In 2010, the band expanded with the addition of guitarist Austin Jenkins. They toured extensively, opening for bands like Wilco in 2012 and performing at festivals such as Bonnaroo and Outside Lands. Key members Austin Jenkins and Josh Block departed in 2015, leading to new members Jonathan Horne and Jeffrey Olson joining the band. In 2018, Petralli and Terebecki co-founded Radio Milk, a recording studio and venue in Austin, where they produced several of White Denim’s subsequent albums, including “Performance” (2018), “Side Effects” (2019), and “In Person” (2019). During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, they created and released “World As A Waiting Room” within 30 days. Their latest album, “12,” was released in December 2024, supported by a tour in the UK and Ireland.
