William Tyler

Joining the acclaimed band Lambchop in 1998, William Tyler commenced his professional music career, initially contributing on organ before transitioning to guitar. He further cemented his presence in the indie music scene as a member of Silver Jews from 2001 through 2009. Tyler explored his solo material under the working title The Paper Hats before releasing his official debut solo studio album, Behold the Spirit, on November 22, 2010. Produced by Adam Bednarik and Tyler, the album launched his independent career via Tompkins Square Records, setting the stage for his distinct contributions to cosmic country, folk, and indie folk music.

His talents also extended to production, notably helming the debut album for Jake Xerxes Fussell in 2015 and co-producing the track ‘Survivor’ for Mary J. Blige’s 2017 album, Strength of a Woman. His output continued with Goes West in 2019, followed by the critically noted soundtrack Music From First Cow in 2020. That same year, Tyler released the EP New Vanitas.

Demonstrating his collaborative versatility, he teamed up with Marisa Anderson for the album Lost Futures in 2021 and released the EP Understand with Luke Schneider that same year, showcasing his expansive reach across diverse musical landscapes. In 2023, William Tyler debuted the single ‘Darkness, Darkness’ as part of an upcoming collaboration album with British electronic producer Four Tet, signaling a new stylistic direction. He is also preparing for the release of his forthcoming album, Time Indefinite, which features a more introspective and lo-fi sound. Further evolving his career trajectory, Tyler recently transitioned from Merge Records to the artist-run label Psychic Hotline, underlining his commitment to a deliberate and artist-focused approach to his work.
