Yumi Zouma

Yumi Zouma is a celebrated New Zealand alternative pop band that originated in Christchurch, Canterbury. Formed by Josh Burgess, Charlie Ryder, and vocalist Kim Pflaum, the group began their musical journey in 2014, utilizing file-sharing services to collaborate remotely. Their debut release, EP I, garnered significant attention, leading to a record deal with Brooklyn-based label Cascine. The band’s early success was marked by positive reviews from prominent outlets like Pitchfork and The Guardian, which helped establish their presence in the music scene.

In 2016, Yumi Zouma released their first full-length album, Yoncalla, showcasing a refined sound that transitioned from their earlier long-distance writing approach to a more collaborative studio environment. The album was recorded in Paris and featured singles such as “Keep It Close To Me” and “Barricade (Matter of Fact).” This project solidified their reputation as innovators in the synth-pop genre, further enhanced by their extensive touring schedule that included performances alongside renowned artists like Lorde.

The band’s second album, Willowbank, released in 2017, marked a significant evolution in their sound, incorporating organic instrumentation and stronger collaboration among members. The lead single, “Depths (Pt. I),” achieved notable streaming success, demonstrating their growing influence in the music industry. Following this, they released EP III in 2018, continuing to explore their creative boundaries.

In 2020, Yumi Zouma signed with Polyvinyl Record Co. and released their third studio album, Truth or Consequences, featuring standout singles like “Right Track / Wrong Man” and “Cool For A Second.” Their fourth album, Present Tense, released in 2022, was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, showcasing their adaptability and commitment to their craft. With a unique blend of dreamy pop and innovative soundscapes, Yumi Zouma continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
