Zain Javadd Malik was born on January 12, 1993, in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. His father was an immigrant Pakistani Muslim, and his mother was of English and Irish descent. Malik grew up in East Bowling, Bradford, in a working-class family and neighborhood. He attended Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School in Bradford, where he took performing arts courses and appeared in school productions. He listened to his father’s urban music records, primarily R&B, hip hop, and reggae, and wrote raps as a teenager. Before pursuing music, he intended to earn an academic degree in English with aspirations of becoming an English teacher.
In 2010, at age 17, Malik auditioned as a solo contestant for the seventh series of The X Factor in Manchester. Although eliminated before the final round, judges Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell grouped him with fellow contestants Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson to form One Direction. The boy band quickly gained popularity, signed a reported £2 million recording contract with Syco Records, and later signed with Columbia Records in North America. One Direction released their debut studio album, “Up All Night,” in 2011, becoming the first UK group to have their debut album reach number one in the United States and topping charts in 16 countries. Their lead single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” achieved international commercial success. They followed with albums “Take Me Home” (2012), “Midnight Memories” (2013), and “Four” (2014), all achieving significant chart success globally and undertaking successful world tours.
Malik departed from One Direction on March 25, 2015, citing a desire for a more normal life and creative differences. In July 2015, he signed a solo recording deal with RCA Records. His debut solo album, “Mind of Mine,” released in March 2016, debuted at number one in both the UK and US, making him the first British male artist to achieve this with a debut single (“Pillowtalk”) and album. He released his second studio album, “Icarus Falls,” in 2018, and his third, “Nobody Is Listening,” in 2021. In 2023, he signed a new recording contract with Mercury Records, releasing “Love Like This” and his fourth album, “Room Under the Stairs,” in 2024. Throughout his career, Malik has received several accolades, including an American Music Award and an MTV Video Music Award.
