About

Vampire Weekend formed in New York City in 2006, originating from a rap collaboration among members at Columbia University. The band quickly distinguished itself by incorporating elements of indie pop, Afropop, and chamber music into their sound. Their self-titled debut album, “Vampire Weekend,” released in 2008, achieved critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching number 15 on the UK Albums Chart and number 17 on the Billboard 200. This album featured charting singles “A-Punk” and “Oxford Comma,” with “A-Punk” notably appearing in films, television shows, and video games. The band’s early success included being named “The Year’s Best New Band” by Spin magazine in 2008, a notable achievement prior to their debut album’s release.

Their second album, “Contra,” released in 2010, further solidified their standing by debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200. This made them the first independent artist to achieve a number one album without a major label affiliation, a significant milestone for independently distributed music. “Contra” sold 124,000 copies in its first week and was certified Gold by the RIAA, surpassing 500,000 units sold in the US. The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. The band continued their trajectory with “Modern Vampires of the City,” released in 2013, which also debuted at number one on the Billboard chart and won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 2014. This marked their second consecutive number-one album and second Grammy win in this category.

In 2016, founding multi-instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij departed the band, though he continued to contribute to subsequent projects. The remaining core trio, Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio, and Chris Tomson, released “Father of the Bride” in 2019. This album became their third consecutive number-one debut on the Billboard 200 and earned them another Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. The band has explored new creative avenues, including touring influences from jam bands like Phish and the Grateful Dead, and engaging with fans through unofficial merchandise. Their fifth studio album, “Only God Was Above Us,” released in April 2024, has also garnered critical acclaim, demonstrating their continued evolution and impact in the music industry. The band also launched a podcast, “Vampire Campfire,” in 2024 to promote the album and discuss relevant topics.
