2 Dope Queens was a comedy podcast hosted by Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson, which ran from April 4, 2016, to November 14, 2018. The duo created a platform that celebrated diverse voices in comedy, featuring female comedians, comedians of color, and LGBT comedians. The podcast quickly gained traction, reaching number one on the iTunes podcast charts for the first seven days following its launch. Recorded live at Union Hall in Brooklyn, each episode featured three guest comedians and explored topics such as race, gender, sex, romance, hair journeys, and living in New York, often with a humorous twist.
The podcast originated from “Blaria LIVE!,” a monthly stand-up show in Brooklyn also hosted by Robinson and Williams, which itself was inspired by Robinson’s blog of the same name. This foundation allowed them to hone their format and establish a loyal audience. The success of “2 Dope Queens” led to the creation of a spin-off podcast, “Sooo Many White Guys,” hosted by Phoebe Robinson and produced by Ilana Glazer, which debuted in July 2016. The show’s popularity further expanded with a four-episode HBO special in February and March 2018, directed by Tig Notaro, featuring high-profile guests like Jon Stewart and Sarah Jessica Parker. A second four-episode HBO season aired in 2019, cementing their status in mainstream media.
After a successful run, including an interview with Michelle Obama in its final episode, the podcast concluded, but its impact continued. Phoebe Robinson signed an overall deal with ABC Studios in 2019, showcasing her continued influence as a writer, comedian, and actress. Jessica Williams also continued her career in film and television. The duo’s work on 2 Dope Queens earned them recognition, including nominations for a Shorty Award (2017), Webby Awards (2017, 2018), and an iHeartRadio Podcast Award (2019), securing a People’s Voice Winner for Comedy Podcasts at the 2018 Webby Awards.
