Ab De Villiers has captivated audiences globally as a cricketer, celebrated for his dynamic batting and unwavering commitment on the field. After making his Test debut at age 20 against England in December 2004, swiftly demonstrating his prowess with a match-saving half-century, Ab De Villiers went on to establish a formidable international cricketing career. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut against England in February 2005, followed by his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut against Australia in 2006. An early career highlight included becoming the first South African to score a double century against India in 2008.
His leadership capabilities led to his appointment as captain of the national ODI side in 2011. Demonstrating his versatility, he equaled the record of 11 dismissals in a Test match in 2013, further becoming the first wicket-keeper to score a century and claim 10 dismissals in a single Test that same year. On January 18, 2015, De Villiers etched his name in history by setting records for the fastest ODI fifty (16 balls) and fastest ODI century (31 balls), ultimately scoring 149 runs off just 44 balls against the West Indies. That year, he also became the record holder for the fastest 150 in ODI history (62 balls).
He continued to play a pivotal role in Twenty20 franchise cricket, notably for Royal Challengers Bangalore (20112021) in the Indian Premier League, where he recorded three of his four T20 centuries. His domestic career included playing for Northerns (2003/042016/17) and Titans (2003/042017/18). He officially retired from all forms of cricket on November 19, 2021. In recognition of his unparalleled contributions to the sport, De Villiers was inducted into the RCB Hall of Fame in 2022 and further honored with induction into the prestigious ICC Hall of Fame in October 2024.
