Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje

Born in Islington, London, on August 22, 1967, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s early life involved growing up in Tilbury with foster parents of Yoruba origin. After a brief return to Nigeria at age eight, he faced challenges of cultural assimilation and racial abuse upon his return to the UK. He attended a boarding school in Surrey, which marked a turning point in his education. He went on to pursue higher education, earning a Bachelor’s degree from the University of London and a Master’s in Law from King’s College London. While studying, he started a career in modeling, which eventually led him to Los Angeles and into acting. In 2017, Princess Anne awarded him an Honorary PhD from the University of London, recognizing his achievements.

Akinnuoye-Agbaje began his acting career in 1995 with a role in the film “Congo.” He became widely recognized for his portrayal of Simon Adebisi in the HBO prison series “Oz” (1997-2000) and Mr. Eko in ABC’s “Lost” (2005-2006), a role for which he earned a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. His filmography includes roles in significant productions such as Lock-Nah in “The Mummy Returns” (2001), Nykwana Wombosi in “The Bourne Identity” (2002), Heavy Duty in “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” (2009), Algrim the Strong/Kurse in “Thor: The Dark World” (2013), and Killer Croc in “Suicide Squad” (2016). He also appeared as Malko in the fifth season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” (2015) and Ogunwe in “His Dark Materials” (2022).

Beyond acting, Akinnuoye-Agbaje made his feature directorial debut with “Farming” (2018), a film based on his own life story, which premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. The film won the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature at the Edinburgh Film Festival, with Damson Idris receiving an award for Best Performance. His work as a writer includes “Farming” (2018) and “Africana!” (2007). He also narrated an immersive audiovisual tour for the Roman Colosseum in 2021, showcasing his diverse contributions to the arts.
