About

Alain de Botton was born in Zürich, Switzerland, on December 20, 1969. He spent his early childhood in Switzerland, fluent in both French and German before moving to the UK at the age of 12. He attended the Dragon School and then Harrow School. His academic journey took him to the University of Cambridge, where he earned a double starred first in History from Gonville and Caius College. Following this, he completed an MPhil in Philosophy at King’s College London in 1992. He began a PhD in French philosophy at Harvard University but chose to leave to pursue writing for the general public, aiming to make complex philosophical ideas accessible.

His career as a writer began with his first novel, “Essays in Love,” published in 1993, which explored the dynamics of romance and sold over two million copies globally. This success established his distinctive approach to integrating philosophical commentary into narrative. In 1997, he transitioned to non-fiction with “How Proust Can Change Your Life,” which became a bestseller in both the US and UK. De Botton continued to publish works like “The Consolations of Philosophy” (2000), which applied the teachings of philosophers such as Epicurus, Montaigne, and Nietzsche to common modern-day challenges, and “Status Anxiety” (2004), examining societal concerns about status and success. His book “The Architecture of Happiness” (2006) investigated how architectural aesthetics influence well-being.

De Botton expanded his work beyond writing by co-founding The School of Life in 2008, an educational organization focused on emotional intelligence and wisdom for everyday living, with branches in several cities worldwide. In 2009, he launched Living Architecture, a project that commissions leading architects to design holiday homes in the UK, aiming to promote appreciation for modern architecture. He has lectured extensively at platforms such as TED conferences and the Melbourne Writers Festival, where he received “The Fellowship of Schopenhauer” in 2015. He also contributed regularly to “The Independent on Sunday” and presents on BBC Radio 4.
