About

Brian Edward Cox, born on March 3, 1968, in Oldham, England, is a renowned physicist and musician. His early life was characterized by interests beyond academics, including dance, gymnastics, and spotting aircraft and buses. He attended Hulme Grammar School and, influenced by Carl Sagan’s book ‘Cosmos’ at age 12, developed an early interest in physics. Despite a self-professed ‘D’ in his A-level mathematics, his commitment to practice led to significant academic achievements.

Before embarking on his scientific career, Cox was a keyboard player for the rock band Dare, releasing two studio albums: ‘Out of the Silence’ (1988) and ‘Blood from Stone’ (1991). He later joined the dance act D:Ream, achieving several UK chart hits, including ‘Things Can Only Get Better.’ He continued his musical pursuits while studying physics at the University of Manchester, where he earned a first-class Bachelor of Science degree. After D:Ream disbanded in 1997, he completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree in high-energy particle physics in 1998, with a thesis on ‘Double diffraction dissociation at large momentum transfer,’ based on research at DESY in Hamburg, Germany.

Currently, Professor of Particle Physics at the University of Manchester and the Royal Society Professor for Public Engagement in Science, Cox is recognized for his work on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. He is widely known for presenting science programs on BBC Radio 4 and television, notably ‘The Infinite Monkey Cage’ and the ‘Wonders of…’ series. His ability to explain complex scientific concepts in an accessible manner has earned him numerous accolades, including the Kelvin Medal and Prize (2010), the Michael Faraday Prize (2012), and an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2010, followed by Commander of the same Order (CBE) in 2020.
