Alex Bowen, born on September 4, 1993, in San Diego, California, is an American water polo player recognized for his contributions to club and national teams. Early in his career, he attended Santana High School in Santee, CA, where he excelled in both water polo and swimming, captaining the water polo team for two years and the swim team for one. During his high school career, Bowen set a CIF San Diego Section record for career goals, with 547, and earned multiple MVP and All-American honors. His club water polo experience with San Diego Shores also saw him achieve Junior Olympics All-American status from 2008 to 2011, securing third and fourth-place finishes at the Junior Olympics.
Bowen continued his athletic and academic journey at Stanford University, where he majored in Product Design and played for the men’s water polo squad for four years. At Stanford, he scored over 200 goals, leading his team with 53 goals in 2011, his freshman year. He consistently earned First Team All-American and First Team All-MPSF honors from 2011 to 2014, and was an MPSF Tournament MVP in 2014. After graduating in 2015, Bowen began his professional career, competing for various international clubs such as Miskolci VLC in Hungary (2016-2019), Partizan in Serbia, Apollon in Greece, and Mladost Zagreb in Croatia (2019-2020), where he won the Adriatic League Championship and scored 49 goals in 2019. He currently competes for Noisy-le-Sec in France.
His international career with the USA Men’s National Team includes three Olympic appearances in 2016 (10th place), 2020 (6th place), and 2024 (bronze medal). He has also participated in numerous World Championships, achieving his best finish of 6th place in 2022. Bowen has been a key player in Pan American Games, earning gold medals in 2015, 2019 in Lima, and 2023 in Santiago. His consistent performance at the highest levels of the sport positions him as a notable figure in American water polo.
