Alexis Ohanian Sr. was born on April 24, 1983, in Brooklyn, New York City, and raised in a Maryland suburb. His paternal grandparents were Armenian Genocide refugees, and his mother was German. Ohanian developed an early interest in technology, taking computer programming classes in middle school and building websites for non-profit organizations. While attending the University of Virginia, where he double-majored in history and business commerce, he decided to pursue entrepreneurship.
In 2005, Ohanian co-founded Reddit with Steve Huffman, securing funding from Y Combinator. Reddit was acquired by Condé Nast for an estimated $10–$20 million in 2006. He remained involved with Reddit, returning as Executive Chair in 2014 to oversee a period of significant growth. In 2020, Ohanian resigned from Reddit’s board, advocating for a Black director to fill his seat. Following this, he launched his venture capital firm, Seven Seven Six (776), which quickly amassed over $750 million in assets under management within its first year, focusing on software and empathy-driven investments. In 2022, he also launched the 776 Foundation with a $20 million commitment to support young innovators fighting climate change.
Beyond Reddit and Seven Seven Six, Ohanian has been involved in diverse initiatives. In 2007, he founded Breadpig, a company that sells “geeky merchandise” and donates proceeds to charity. He also helped launch the travel search website Hipmunk. As a prominent early-stage investor, he co-founded Initialized Capital in 2010, investing in over 40 companies that later achieved ‘unicorn’ status, including Coinbase, HubSpot, and Instacart. In 2020, Ohanian became a lead investor in Angel City FC, a National Women’s Soccer League team, and in 2024, he launched Athlos, a women’s-only track and field event. In May 2025, he acquired a 10 percent share of Chelsea Women FC for £20 million.
