Alyssa Sutherland was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Her career in the public eye began at the age of 15 when she won the 1997 annual Bonne Belle model search for the Australian teen magazine, Girlfriend. This victory led to her signing a contract with Vogue Australia. Following this initial success, Sutherland moved to New York, where she cultivated an extensive modeling career. She appeared in numerous campaigns for globally recognized brands such as Calvin Klein, Coco Chanel, Ralph Lauren, and Bulgari. Her work encompassed runway shows, print editorials, and television advertisements, and she was photographed by notable photographers including Herb Ritts, Steven Meisel, and Bruce Weber. Her modeling portfolio included appearances in magazines like Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar, and Glamour across various international editions. In 2007, she also became the newest “Flake Girl” for Cadbury, revitalizing their iconic television advertisements.
Sutherland subsequently transitioned into acting, taking on roles in both independent films and television series. Her early acting credits include the independent films Day on Fire (2006), which screened at the Toronto and Berlin Film Festivals, Don’t Look Up (2009), and The Fortune Theory (2013). On television, she appeared in episodes of NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Fox’s New Amsterdam. A significant turning point in her acting career came with her role as Princess Aslaug in History’s historical drama series, Vikings, where she starred from 2013 to 2016 for 35 episodes. She continued to secure prominent roles, playing Eve Copeland in The Mist (2017) for 10 episodes and Hedy Lamarr in an episode of Timeless (2018). More recently, Sutherland was cast as Ellie in the 2023 horror film Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment of the Evil Dead franchise, and also featured in the TV mini-series New Gold Mountain (2021).
