About

Dennis Haskins was born on November 18, 1950, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Before embarking on his acting career, Haskins was involved in the music industry, working as a music manager, agent, and concert promoter for artists such as Tom Jones and Gregg Allman. He also authored a guide for actors titled “Rating the Agents.” Haskins is an alumnus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he was an active student, participating in the Drama Club, serving as entertainment chairman for the Student Government Association, and playing basketball. He was also a founding member of the Harlequins, a community theater group, and even managed the local band Overland Express.

Haskins gained widespread recognition for his iconic role as Principal Richard Belding in the teen sitcom ‘Saved by the Bell.’ He first portrayed the character in 1988 in ‘Good Morning, Miss Bliss’ on the Disney Channel. When the show was redeveloped into ‘Saved by the Bell’ for NBC, Haskins was the only adult cast member to remain, continuing the role through its original run from 1989 to 1993. He further reprised the role in the spin-off ‘Saved by the Bell: The New Class’ from 1993 to 2000, becoming the only regular cast member to stay for its entire duration. His catchphrase, “Hey, hey, hey, what is going on here?”, became synonymous with the character and show.

Beyond ‘Saved by the Bell,’ Haskins has appeared in numerous television series and films. Early in his career, he had guest roles in series such as ‘The Twilight Zone’ (1985) and ‘Magnum, P.I.’ (1980), as well as multiple appearances in ‘The Dukes of Hazzard.’ More recently, he has appeared in films like ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’ (2014) as a snake oil salesman and ‘Clemency’ (2019) as Mr. Collins. Haskins has also expanded his work into music, releasing a karaoke album titled “Karaoke with Your Favorite Principal Dennis” in 2009, and appearing in music videos for artists like Iwrestledabearonce, Dirty Heads, and Khalid. He has also been involved in professional wrestling, appearing in the YouTube series ‘Z! True Long Island Story.’ In 2016, Haskins donated his ‘Saved by the Bell’ memorabilia to the UTC library, which now houses an exhibit about his career.
