Anders Fogh Rasmussen was first elected to the Danish Parliament in 1978, representing the Liberal Party, marking the start of a distinguished career in public service. He swiftly advanced through governmental and opposition roles, serving as Minister for Taxation from 1987 to 1992 and Minister for Economic Affairs from 1990 to 1992. During his impactful tenure as Minister for Economic Affairs, Mr. Rasmussen played a pivotal role in negotiating and signing the Maastricht Treaty, a landmark international agreement, between 1990 and 1992.
Following this, he served as the spokesman for the Liberal Party from 1992 to 1998 and concurrently as vice-chairman of the Parliaments Economic and Political Affairs Committee from 1993 to 1998. In 1998, he was elected chairman of the Liberal Partys national organization. Following the parliamentary elections in 2001, Mr. Rasmussen successfully formed his first government, leading a coalition of the Liberal Party and the Conservative Peoples Party.
After his impactful tenure at NATO, he founded Rasmussen Global in 2014, a political consultancy providing strategic advice on international affairs. Demonstrating his continued commitment to global democratic principles, he also established the Alliance of Democracies Foundation in 2017, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing democracy worldwide. Leveraging his extensive experience in global affairs, Mr. Rasmussen has continued to advise corporations and foster democratic initiatives.
He has served as a senior advisor to Citigroup since 2020 and previously advised the Boston Consulting Group. In 2022, at the request of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he co-chaired an international working group focused on security guarantees for Ukraine, a critical effort that laid the groundwork for the Kyiv Security Compact and the G7 joint declaration on security guarantees. Anders Fogh Rasmussen continues to be a prominent voice in international policy and security debates.
