Antonia Ramel is a talented Swedish dressage rider who has represented her country at the Olympics and helped the national team to win bronze at the 2019 European Championships in Rotterdam. Also on the team was her younger sister and fellow Olympian, Juliette Ramel.
Ramel was born in the tiny parish of Bettna, Sweden, in July 1985. She and her sister grew up on their parents’ farm where there wasn’t much for them to do, so their parents gave them a pony to give them a hobby. Both took to riding, with Antonia initially favouring show jumping. However, as she grew, she became too tall to jump with her pony and faced a choice: either sell the pony or retrain it for dressage. She chose the latter. She and her sister otherwise had little help in their emerging careers, often having to travel around the country to competitions by themselves because their parents were so busy.
Ramek’s international career began in the early 2000s, first as a young rider and then as an Under-25 Grand Prix competitor. She graduated to senior international competitions in 2017, competing in Nations Cup events, and she achieved her first major success in 2019 when she helped the Swedish team win bronze at the 2019 Euros. She and her sister were both picked to represent Sweden at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
