An acclaimed surgeon, academic and politician, Ara Darzi is a globally distinguished figure. Darzi has been celebrated for his impressive academic endeavours; he obtained a professorship in 1996 at Imperial College London, holds the Paul Hamlyn Chair of Surgery at Imperial College, and authoritative positions at the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research. Among other professional accomplishments, he is Director of the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College and an honorary consultant surgeon.
Darzi was knighted for his invaluable services to medicine in 2002 and later became a member of the House of Lords in 2007 as Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham. In the same year, he was appointed Under-Secretary of State in the Department of Health by then Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. Internationally recognised for his pioneering medical work, he has largely focussed on minimal invasive and robot-assisted surgery, and has made rapid progress in the field with his biological research and investigation.
Darzi’s medical and surgical accomplishment is driven by his passion for patient welfare and quality of care. He has published over 800 peer review papers, and has co-authored and edited many esteemed publications to date. Darzi holds several senior positions at various organisations, including Honorary Fellow at the Royal Academy of Engineering, Fellow at the Academy Medical Sciences, Fellow at the Royal Society and Foreign Associate at the Institute of Medicine.
