Ava DuVernay

Ava DuVernay has transitioned from publicist to an Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Emmy-nominated filmmaker, known for her impactful storytelling across film and television. After becoming the first African-American woman to receive the Best Director Prize at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for her narrative feature ‘Middle of Nowhere,’ Ava DuVernay established herself as an Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Emmy-nominated filmmaker. DuVernay began her career in public relations, founding The DuVernay Agency (DVAPR) in 1999. Through DVAPR, she provided marketing and PR services for films including ‘Lumumba,’ ‘Spy Kids,’ and ‘Shrek 2.’ She transitioned to filmmaking in 2005 with her self-funded short film, ‘Saturday Night Life.’ Her feature directorial debut was the documentary ‘This Is the Life’ (2008), chronicling the 1990s Los Angeles hip hop movement, which garnered multiple audience awards.
