Ben Kingsley

Born Krishna Bhanji on December 31, 1943, in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, Ben Kingsley’s early life saw him delve into stage acting in the 1960s. He later changed his name professionally to Ben Kingsley, believing a foreign name might impede his acting career. His commitment to the stage was evident after joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1967, where he performed for 15 years in numerous acclaimed productions including ‘As You Like It’, ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

Kingsley achieved international recognition for his portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in Richard Attenborough’s 1982 film, ‘Gandhi’. This pivotal role earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, and the London Film Critics’ Circle Award, establishing him as one of Britain’s premier actors. His career continued to flourish with significant roles such as Itzhak Stern in Steven Spielberg’s ‘Schindler’s List’ (1993), which garnered him a BAFTA nomination. Throughout the late 1990s and beyond, he consistently delivered impactful performances in both film and television, including as Sweeney Todd in ‘The Tale of Sweeney Todd’ (1997) and Otto Frank in ‘Anne Frank: The Whole Story’ (2001), for which he received a Screen Actors’ Guild Award.

His contributions to drama were formally recognized in 2002 when he was appointed Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire. Kingsley continued to take on diverse and challenging roles, from the menacing Don Logan in ‘Sexy Beast’ (2000), which earned him another Academy Award nomination, to appearing in major blockbusters like ‘Iron Man 3’ (2013) and lending his voice to animated features such as ‘The Jungle Book’ (2016). His sustained excellence was further acknowledged with the BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Filmed Entertainment and the Fellowship Award at the Asian Awards in 2013.
