Boyd Martin, born on August 20, 1979, in Australia, began his riding career at the Forrest Hills Pony Club. His parents, Toy Dorgan, an American speed skater, and Ross Martin, an Australian cross-country skier, met at the 1968 Winter Olympics. After high school, Martin spent eight years at Heath and Rozzie Ryan’s Newcastle Equestrian Centre, initially as a working student and later establishing his own business. During this period, he represented Australia at the Young Rider level in a Trans-Tasman three-day event and won the last long-format four-star event at the 2003 Adelaide CCI4* riding True Blue Toozac. He was long-listed for the Australian Eventing Team for the 2000, 2004, and 2008 Summer Olympics.
In 2006, Martin competed at the Rolex Kentucky CCI4* with Ying Yang Yo. He and his wife, Silva, moved to the U.S. in 2007 to pursue international competition. Martin served as an assistant to Olympian Phillip Dutton for three years before launching Windurra USA in 2010. Since 2009, he has represented the United States in international competitions. In 2011, following a barn fire and personal tragedies, Martin and Neville Bardos finished 7th at the Burghley CCI4* in England. Neville Bardos was named the 2011 International Horse of the Year by the USEF, and Martin was recognized as the 2011 Overall Rider of the Year by The Chronicle of the Horse.
Martin has participated in four consecutive Summer Olympic Games (2012, 2016, 2020, 2024). He is a two-time Pan American Games team gold medalist (2015, 2019) and individual gold medalist (2019). He secured a silver medal with the U.S. Eventing Team at the 2022 FEI Eventing World Championships in Pratoni, Italy, which qualified the team for the 2024 Olympic Games. Martin won the inaugural Maryland 5 Star in 2021 with On Cue, making him the first American to win a CCI5* since 2008. He also claimed the Defender/USEF CCI5*-L Eventing National Championship in 2025, reaching the number one spot on the FEI Eventing World Ranking List, a first for an American in 20 years. He owns and operates Windurra USA with his wife in Cochranville, Pennsylvania, with winter training in Aiken, South Carolina.
