Branislav Mitrović was born on January 30, 1985, in Novi Sad, SFR Yugoslavia. He began his professional water polo career, developing quickly as a goalkeeper. His club career includes stints with Serbian and Hungarian teams such as Vojvodina (2003–2007), Partizan (2007–2010), Ferencvárosi (2010–2011), Debreceni (2011–2014), Egri (2014–2018), and OSC Budapest (2018–2020), before joining Vasas in 2020 where he currently plays. Mitrović’s early coaches advised him to utilize his physical attributes, specifically his height and hand size, which led him to excel in the goalkeeper position.
Mitrović has had an illustrious international career representing Serbia, amassing 16 medals. His achievements include two Olympic gold medals at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. He also secured a World Championship title in 2015 and four European Championship gold medals in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018. His contributions to the Serbian national team were recognized when he was named the Best Goalkeeper at the 2015 World Championship and the 2020 Olympic Games. In 2021, he was acknowledged as the best goalkeeper in the world by an experts’ jury and assumed the role of Serbia’s captain. He retired from the national team in 2024.
Following his retirement from the national team, Mitrović transitioned into coaching. He is currently part of the coaching staff for Vasas, specifically coaching the U13 team. In this role, he has been involved with events such as the HaBaWaBa International Festival PLUS 2025, emphasizing the importance of youth development in water polo. His coaching philosophy centers on making water polo engaging for children, encouraging fun while developing fundamental skills. He also served as an assistant coach to Slobodan Nikic at Vasas.
