Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán, known professionally as Canelo Álvarez, was born on July 18, 1990, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. His family later relocated to Juanacatlán, Jalisco. Growing up, Álvarez was exposed to a boxing environment as seven of his brothers also pursued professional boxing careers, including Ramón Álvarez, Ricardo Álvarez, and Rigoberto Álvarez. This early exposure to the sport set the foundation for his own impressive trajectory. He began boxing at approximately 13 years old, inspired by his older brother Rigoberto’s professional debut. His amateur career was brief but successful, culminating in him becoming the 2005 Junior Mexican National Boxing Champion at just 15 years old with a record of 44 wins and 2 losses.
Álvarez transitioned to professional boxing at the age of 15, as his trainers, Chepo and Eddy Reynoso, found it challenging to secure suitable junior opponents for him. His professional debut was on October 29, 2005. Early in his career, he demonstrated significant power, knocking out 11 of his first 13 documented opponents within 19 months. A notable early achievement was his victory over future IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vázquez on January 20, 2006, in his hometown. He would later defeat Vázquez again in a rematch on June 28, 2008, on a historical fight card where all seven Álvarez brothers competed on the same night. This marked a significant personal and career milestone.
His career progression saw him capture multiple regional titles before moving into world championship contention. In 2011, he became the youngest boxer to secure the World Boxing Council (WBC) light middleweight title. Over the years, he demonstrated remarkable adaptability by winning world championships across four weight classes, from light middleweight to light heavyweight, and unified titles in three of these divisions. A defining moment came in 2021 when he became the first undisputed super middleweight champion, unifying all four major world titles within 12 months. His journey has been characterized by consistent performance and a willingness to face top-tier opponents, solidifying his status as one of boxing’s elite athletes.
