About

Casper Robert Van Dien Jr. was born on December 18, 1968, in Milton, Florida. His early life was influenced by a strong military family background, with his father serving as a U.S. Navy Commander and fighter pilot, and his grandfather a Marine during World War II. Van Dien grew up on Van Dien Avenue in Ridgewood, New Jersey, a street named after a relative, indicating deep roots in the area. He later attended the Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, Florida, graduating third in command. His academic pursuits continued at Florida State University before he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting. He began his career with minor television roles.

Van Dien’s early career involved recurring roles such as Ty Moody on the soap opera “One Life to Live” and Griffin Stone on “Beverly Hills, 90210”. A significant turning point came in 1997 when he secured the lead role of Johnny Rico in Paul Verhoeven’s science fiction action film “Starship Troopers.” This role propelled him into wider recognition, leading to his casting as Tarzan in “Tarzan and the Lost City” in 1998, a film that included location shooting in Africa where he rode an African elephant. In 1999, he featured in Tim Burton’s “Sleepy Hollow” as Brom Van Brunt.

Throughout his career, Van Dien has maintained a consistent presence in film and television, often appearing in genre-specific projects. He reprised his role as Johnny Rico in “Starship Troopers 3: Marauder” (2008) and lent his voice to the character in the video game “Starship Troopers: Extermination” (2024). He also took on the role of Johnny Cage in the web series “Mortal Kombat Legacy” seasons 2 and 3, earning an award for his comedic performance. Beyond acting, Van Dien has expanded his work to include directing, with three films under his belt, one of which, “Patient Killer” (2014), received Best Film and Best Director awards and was acquired by Lifetime.
