Karen Gillan gained significant recognition as Amy Pond, companion to the Eleventh Doctor in the acclaimed science fiction series ‘Doctor Who’ (2010-2013), having previously appeared in a different role in a 2008 episode. Prior to this, Gillan was scouted by a modeling agency and participated in London Fashion Week in 2007. Her early television career included a two-year stint on ‘The Kevin Bishop Show’ (2008-2009) and guest appearances in the ITV drama ‘Rebus’ and Channel 4’s ‘Stacked’ (2008). In 2010, Gillan won a Young Scot Award in Entertainment, and made her theatre debut in 2011 in John Osborne’s ‘Inadmissible Evidence’ at the Donmar Warehouse.
Transitioning to Hollywood, Gillan portrayed Jean Shrimpton in the television film ‘We’ll Take Manhattan’ (2012) and starred in the horror film ‘Oculus’ (2013). A pivotal career milestone was her casting as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ (2014), a role for which she famously shaved her head. The same year, she led the ABC sitcom ‘Selfie’. Her performance in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Oculus’ earned her the Best Female Newcomer award at the 20th Empire Awards (2015).
She has returned to British television in 2024 with the series ‘Douglas Is Cancelled’, a performance that received critical acclaim. Also in 2024, she is set to appear in ‘The Life of Chuck’.
