Chick McGee

Charles Dean Hayes, known professionally as Chick McGee, was born on November 26, 1957, in London, Ohio. He graduated from London High School in 1976 and furthered his education at an independent broadcast school in June 1976. McGee began his radio career at a 1,000-watt station in West Virginia, holding various on-air positions across West Virginia and Ohio. He was known as Chuck Mikelz prior to adopting his well-known stage name, Chick McGee, which was inspired by the Jack McGee character from ‘The Incredible Hulk’ TV series.

McGee joined ‘The Bob & Tom Show’ on April 1, 1985, originally serving as the show’s announcer. His role evolved to include recapping sports news and acting as the show’s comic foil. In January 1995, McGee temporarily left ‘The Bob & Tom Show’ to co-host ‘Kevin & McGee’ at KGB-FM in San Diego, California. After a six-month tenure, he returned to ‘The Bob & Tom Show’ on July 10, 1995, resuming his prior responsibilities. His contributions were integral to the national success of ‘The Bob & Tom Show’, which earned recognition from publications such as Billboard and Radio and Records.

Demonstrating career progression beyond traditional radio, McGee launched his podcast, ‘Off the Air Podcast’, on July 24, 2012. After 188 episodes, the podcast was rebranded as ‘The Chick McGee Show’ on July 3, 2016, a platform for insights into his personal life and humorous commentary. In 2014, he expanded his professional endeavors by joining TruLuvSports.com as a writer, covering topics such as the Washington Commanders. McGee was inducted into the inaugural class of the Fine Arts Hall of Fame of the London City Schools in 2014, acknowledging his significant achievements in broadcasting.
