Christian Chivu

Cristian Eugen Chivu, born on October 26, 1980, in Reșița, Romania, initiated his professional football journey at his hometown club CSM Reșița. After a period with Universitatea Craiova, he moved to Dutch club Ajax in 1999. At Ajax, Chivu established himself as a proficient defender and a free-kick specialist, eventually becoming the team’s captain. During his tenure, Ajax won the Eredivisie in the 2001-02 season and the KNVB Cup in the same year. He played a crucial role in Ajax’s UEFA Champions League campaign in the 2002-03 season, where the team reached the quarter-finals. His leadership and performance at Ajax led to an €18 million transfer to AS Roma in 2003.

While with Roma, Chivu contributed to the team’s success, winning the Coppa Italia in the 2006-07 season. Despite recurring injury challenges, he was a regular presence in the defense. In 2007, Chivu transferred to Inter Milan, where he spent the remainder of his playing career until retiring in 2014. At Inter, he achieved significant milestones, including three Serie A titles (2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10), two Coppa Italia titles (2009-10, 2010-11), and the UEFA Champions League in the 2009-10 season. A notable incident in his career occurred in 2010 when he sustained a skull fracture during a match, requiring him to wear protective headgear subsequently. Chivu also represented the Romania national team, earning 75 caps between 1999 and 2010 and participating in UEFA European Championships in 2000 and 2008.

Following his retirement as a player, Chivu pursued a managerial career, starting with Inter Milan’s youth teams. He coached the Inter Milan U14 team (2018–2019), U17 team (2019–2020), and U18 team (2020–2021) before taking charge of the Inter Milan U19 team from 2021 to 2024, where he notably won the Campionato Primavera 1 in the 2021–22 season. In February 2025, he was appointed head coach of Parma in Serie A, and in June 2025, he was announced as the head coach of Inter Milan. Beyond his club roles, Chivu has also worked as a football pundit for Italian television and as a technical observer for UEFA.
