Born in 1981 in Berea, Ohio, Christina Tosi, initially pursued a dual degree in applied mathematics and Italian at James Madison University, following a brief stint in electrical engineering at the University of Virginia. Her childhood interest in baking, fostered by her grandmothers, eventually led her to the French Culinary Institute’s pastry arts program. After culinary school, Tosi worked at establishments like Bouley and wd~50, but found the fine dining environment restrictive. A turning point came in 2005 when she was hired by David Chang at Momofuku, initially for administrative tasks. Her passion for baking, rediscovered while making treats for colleagues, led Chang to task her with developing the Momofuku group’s pastry program. This role allowed her to innovate with nostalgic flavors, leading to creations such as Cereal Milk panna cotta.
In 2008, with Chang’s encouragement and a space next to Momofuku Ssam Bar, Tosi launched Milk Bar. Starting with a small team and working long hours, she developed a unique approach combining pastry chef techniques with comfort-food-inspired desserts in a casual setting. Milk Bar quickly gained recognition for items like Cereal Milk, Compost Cookies, and Milk Bar Pie. Tosi leads Milk Bar as its chef and chief executive officer, expanding its presence significantly across major U.S. cities and into retail products. Her culinary influence has been widely recognized, with publications crediting her for starting trends such as the soft-serve craze in restaurants.
Beyond her entrepreneurial success, Tosi has become a mainstream media figure. She joined the judging panel for “MasterChef” and “MasterChef Junior” on Fox in 2015 and has appeared in Netflix series like “Chef’s Table: Pastry” and “Bake Squad.” In 2024, she made a guest appearance on “The Bear.” Tosi has authored several cookbooks, sharing her unique recipes and culinary philosophy, and has engaged with her audience through her online ‘Bake Club’. Her contributions to the culinary world have earned her two James Beard Foundation Awards, including Rising Star Chef of the Year in 2012 and Outstanding Pastry Chef in 2015.
