Colin Montgomerie was born on June 23, 1963, in Glasgow, Scotland, and grew up in Yorkshire, England, where his father, James Montgomerie, was the Managing Director of Fox’s Biscuits. He began his golf career by honing his skills at Ilkley Golf Club, West Yorkshire, and later attended Houston Baptist University in the United States, where he was a top player on the collegiate golf team. Before turning professional, he also secured significant amateur titles, including the 1985 Scottish Amateur Stroke Play Championship and the 1987 Scottish Amateur Championship, and represented Great Britain and Ireland twice in both the Eisenhower Trophy (1984, 1986) and the Walker Cup (1985, 1987), demonstrating his early talent and commitment to the sport.
Montgomerie turned professional in 1987 and was recognized as the European Tour’s Rookie of the Year in 1988. His professional career saw him achieve a record eight European Tour Order of Merit titles, including seven consecutive wins from 1993 to 1999. He accumulated 31 European Tour victories, more than any other British player, placing him fourth on the all-time list. Notably, he won three consecutive Volvo PGA Championships at Wentworth Club between 1998 and 2000. Despite his numerous successes, he finished runner-up in five major championships, including playoff losses in the 1994 U.S. Open and the 1995 PGA Championship, establishing a reputation as one of the best golfers never to win a major. His career-high world ranking was second.
After turning 50 in 2013, Montgomerie transitioned to the PGA Tour Champions and European Senior Tour, where he continued to compete at a high level. He secured three senior major championships: the Senior PGA Championship in 2014 and 2015, and the U.S. Senior Open in 2014. Beyond playing, Montgomerie served as captain of the European Ryder Cup team in 2010, leading them to victory. He also captained the Great Britain and Ireland team in four Seve Trophy stagings, winning three times, and was a successful playing captain in the Royal Trophy in 2010 and 2011. Montgomerie was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2013, recognizing his significant contributions to golf.
