A defining screen presence in Chinese-language cinema, Daniel Wu reshaped what a leading man could look like in Hong Kong film after arriving there in 1997 with no acting experience and no Chinese. Born in Berkeley, California and raised in Orinda, he studied wushu from age 11 after seeing Jet Li in The Shaolin Temple, later founded the University of Oregon Wushu Club in 1994, and majored in architecture before a chance modeling stint led director Yonfan to cast him in 1998’s Bishonen.

His breakthrough came with Benny Chan’s Gen-X Cops in 1999, followed by roles in Purple Storm, Peony Pavilion, and Love Undercover. Signed early on to Jackie Chan’s JC Group, Wu earned a Hong Kong Film Award nomination for City of Glass, won Best Supporting Actor at the 41st Golden Horse Film Awards for New Police Story in 2005, and has since appeared in more than 60 films.

Never one to stay in one lane, Wu made his writing and directorial debut with The Heavenly Kings in 2006, winning Best New Director at the 26th Hong Kong Film Awards. His first English-language role came opposite Kevin Spacey in Inseparable (2011), and from 2015 to 2019 he starred as Sunny on AMC’s Into the Badlands while executive producing.

Recent years have brought motion-capture work as Gul’dan in Warcraft (2016), Tomb Raider (2018), Reminiscence (2021), and a starring turn in Disney+’s wuxia comedy American Born Chinese, extending his reach to global audiences.
