David Horowitz

As co-editor of the influential New Left magazine Ramparts from January 1968, David Horowitz established himself as a significant figure in American political discourse. Previously, he contributed to the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation in London in the mid-1960s, further cementing his role as an active voice in the New Left movement from 1956 to 1975. During the early 1970s, Horowitz also developed a close association with the Black Panther Party, engaging directly with a pivotal period of social and political change. Horowitz undertook a significant ideological shift in the mid-1980s, moving from the radical left to prominent conservative positions.

This transition was publicly marked by his 1985 The Washington Post Magazine article, ‘Lefties for Reagan,’ co-authored with Peter Collier, which articulated their support for President Ronald Reagan. In 1988, he co-founded the Center for the Study of Popular Culture, an institution later renamed the David Horowitz Freedom Center, dedicated to promoting conservative ideas and scholarship. Through the Center, he directed Discover the Networks and served as editor of FrontPage Magazine, platforms designed to analyze political issues from a conservative viewpoint. Further expanding his media presence, he also co-founded Heterodoxy magazine in 1992.

Horowitz continued to publish impactful works, including Big Agenda: President Trump’s Plan to Save America in 2017, and The Enemy Within: How a Totalitarian Movement Is Destroying America in 2021. His body of work establishes him as a polarizing and influential figure in American conservative thought, particularly recognized for his ardent support of Donald Trump and his dedication to challenging progressive ideologies through the David Horowitz Freedom Center and its various initiatives.
