David Horowitz, born David Joel Horowitz on January 10, 1939, in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, became a significant figure in American political discourse. His early life was shaped by parents who were members of the Communist Party of the United States. He pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in 1959, majoring in English, followed by a Master of Arts in English literature from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1961. In his early career, from 1956 to 1975, Horowitz was an active voice in the New Left movement, identifying as a Marxist intellectual. He worked for the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation in London in the mid-1960s and co-edited the New Left magazine *Ramparts* upon his return to the United States in 1968. He also developed a close association with the Black Panther Party in the early 1970s.
Hitting a turning point in the mid-1980s, Horowitz undertook a significant ideological shift, moving from the radical left to conservative positions. This transition was marked by his 1985 *The Washington Post Magazine* article, “Lefties for Reagan,” co-authored with Peter Collier, which explained their newfound support for Ronald Reagan. In 1988, he co-founded the Center for the Study of Popular Culture, which later became the David Horowitz Freedom Center, dedicated to promoting conservative ideas. Through the center, he edited *FrontPage Magazine* and directed *Discover the Networks*, platforms addressing political issues from a conservative viewpoint. His later work included founding Students for Academic Freedom, advocating against perceived political bias in universities, and authoring numerous books critical of progressive ideologies.
Throughout his career, Horowitz was a prolific author, publishing a wide array of books covering his political evolution and conservative critiques. Notable works include his memoir *Radical Son: A Generational Odyssey* (1996), *Big Agenda: President Trump’s Plan to Save America* (2017), and *The Enemy Within: How a Totalitarian Movement Is Destroying America* (2021). His activism extended to various campaigns, such as “Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week” on college campuses and advocating for an “Academic Bill of Rights.” Horowitz passed away on April 29, 2025, at the age of 86 from cancer, leaving behind a legacy as a polarizing and influential figure in American conservative thought, particularly known for his ardent support of Donald Trump.
