David Wayne Toms was born on January 4, 1967, in Monroe, Louisiana. He displayed early talent in golf, winning the 15-17 Boys’ event at the 1984 Junior World Golf Championships. He also played little league baseball alongside future Major League Baseball players Albert Belle and Ben McDonald. After graduating from Airline High School in Bossier City, Louisiana, Toms attended Louisiana State University, where he was a member of the golf team. He turned professional in 1989.
Toms earned his first full PGA Tour card in 1992 after finishing T23 at the qualifying school. After a period on the Nike Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour) in 1995 where he won two tournaments, the Greater Greenville Classic and the Wichita Open, he returned to the PGA Tour in 1996. His breakthrough on the PGA Tour came in 1997 when he won the Quad City Classic. This was followed by more victories, including the Sprint International and the Buick Challenge in 1999, and the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill in 2000. The highlight of his career occurred in 2001 when he won the PGA Championship by one stroke over Phil Mickelson, one of three wins that year.
Throughout his career, Toms has accumulated 13 PGA Tour wins, including a World Golf Championship title at the 2005 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. He transitioned to the PGA Tour Champions, where he has recorded 4 wins, including the U.S. Senior Open in 2018. Beyond his playing career, Toms is involved in golf course design, with his first lead design project being Carter Plantation in Springfield, Louisiana. He also established the David Toms Foundation in 2003, dedicated to assisting underprivileged, abused, and abandoned children, and has actively engaged in fundraising for causes such as Hurricane Katrina relief. For his charitable efforts, he received the 2006 Golf Writers Association of America’s Charlie Bennett Award.
