Derrick Martell Rose was born on October 4, 1988, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up on Chicago’s South Side in the Englewood neighborhood, where he learned the fundamentals of basketball from his older brothers. Rose attended Simeon Career Academy, wearing number 25 in honor of Ben “Benji” Wilson. He quickly gained recognition, leading his freshman and JV teams to city championships with a 24–1 record. Rose’s talent continued to develop, and in his junior year, he led the Simeon Wolverines to the Chicago Public League championship and their first state title in 1984. His senior year saw him ranked as the fifth-best prospect nationally by Sports Illustrated, and he led his team to a second consecutive state championship, finishing the season with a 33–2 record. Rose was named Illinois Mr. Basketball in 2007 and was a McDonald’s All-American.
Rose played one year of college basketball for the Memphis Tigers under coach John Calipari. During his freshman season in 2007–08, he helped lead the Tigers to a 26–0 start, achieving the number one national ranking for the first time in over 25 years. Memphis advanced to the NCAA championship game, setting an NCAA record for most wins in a season (38). Rose averaged 14.9 points, 4.7 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game, earning All-American Third Team honors. In 2009, an NCAA investigation led to the vacation of Memphis’s 2007–08 season records due to issues surrounding Rose’s SAT scores. Following this, Rose declared for the 2008 NBA draft, where he was selected first overall by his hometown Chicago Bulls.
Rose’s professional career began impressively, earning the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2009. He became the youngest player to win the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 2011 at 22 years old. Throughout his career, Rose played for several teams, including the Chicago Bulls (2008–2016), New York Knicks (2016–2017), Cleveland Cavaliers (2017–2018), Minnesota Timberwolves (2018–2019), Detroit Pistons (2019–2021), and Memphis Grizzlies (2023–2024). He was a key member of the United States men’s national basketball teams that won gold medals at the 2010 and 2014 FIBA World Cups. Despite his career being impacted by significant knee injuries, including torn ACLs and menisci, Rose demonstrated remarkable resilience. He retired in September 2024, with the Chicago Bulls planning to retire his number 1 jersey in the 2025–26 season.
