About

Desmond Lyttle, born on September 24, 1971, in Wolverhampton, England, began his football career at Leicester City in 1990. After an initial period without a first-team appearance, he moved to non-League side Worcester City in August 1991 on a free transfer. His strong performances there led him to join Swansea City in July 1992 for £12,500, a newly-promoted Second Division club at the time. Lyttle played a full season with Swansea City, making 46 appearances and scoring one goal, contributing to the team’s fifth-place finish. This early phase of his career established him as a consistent and reliable defender, setting the foundation for his progression into higher divisions.

In July 1993, Lyttle was signed by Nottingham Forest for £375,000, becoming one of Frank Clark’s first acquisitions after Brian Clough’s tenure. He was integral to Forest’s immediate return to the Premier League in the 1993–94 season, where they finished second in the First Division. He continued to play for Nottingham Forest through their Premier League periods, including a third-place finish in 1994–95, and remained with the club during their subsequent relegations and promotions. During his time at Forest, he made 185 appearances and scored 3 goals. Following his departure from Forest, he played for Watford and West Bromwich Albion, contributing to West Brom’s promotion to the Premier League in 2001–02. His professional playing career also included spells at Northampton Town and Forest Green Rovers, before returning to Worcester City for a second time.

Lyttle transitioned into coaching in 2010, initially as caretaker player-manager for Tamworth, where he was later appointed full-time manager. He resigned in 2011, citing challenges with the club’s board. He then managed Hucknall Town from October 2011 to May 2012. In 2012, Lyttle joined York City as a first-team coach, working with Gary Mills and Darron Gee, whom he had played under at Tamworth. Since 2013, he has served as the head football coach at Thomas Telford School in Telford, Shropshire, where he has guided school teams to multiple national finals. This role highlights his commitment to developing young talent and applying his extensive football knowledge in an educational setting.
