About

Jacques Dominique Wilkins, born on January 12, 1960, in Paris, France, embarked on a distinguished basketball career that earned him the moniker “the Human Highlight Film.” His early life, spent in various locations due to his father’s U.S. Army service, eventually led him to Washington, North Carolina, where he showcased exceptional talent at Washington High School. Wilkins was a standout player, earning back-to-back MVP honors for consecutive Class 3-A State Championships in 1978 and 1979. His high school achievements included scoring 48 points, grabbing 27 rebounds, executing 9 dunks, and blocking 8 shots in a single game, which drew national attention and led to his inclusion in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” section. He further solidified his reputation in prominent all-star games such as the McDonald’s All-American Game in 1979, where he contributed 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Wilkins continued his collegiate career at the University of Georgia, joining in 1979, where he maintained his status as an electrifying player. Averaging 21.6 points per game throughout his Bulldogs tenure, he was recognized with a First Team All-Southeastern Conference selection in 1981. His exceptional performance led him to declare for the NBA draft after his junior year, where he was a top prospect. Selected third overall by the Utah Jazz in the 1982 NBA draft, Wilkins was subsequently traded to the Atlanta Hawks, a move that is now regarded as one of the most impactful in NBA history. This trade marked the beginning of his legendary 12-season tenure with the Hawks, establishing him as a cornerstone of the franchise and a prominent figure in professional basketball.

Throughout his professional career, Wilkins maintained a high level of performance, averaging over 25 points per game for ten consecutive seasons. He achieved the NBA scoring title in the 1985–86 season with an average of 30.3 points per game. His career highlights include nine NBA All-Star selections and earning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest championship twice, in 1985 and 1990. After leaving the Hawks, he had stints with the Los Angeles Clippers, Boston Celtics, Panathinaikos, Fortitudo Bologna, San Antonio Spurs, and Orlando Magic before retiring in 1999. In 2006, Wilkins earned induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, recognizing his significant contributions to the sport. He was also named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021, cementing his legacy as one of the league’s all-time great players.
