Ellie Carpenter was born on April 28, 2000, in Cowra, New South Wales, Australia. She embarked on her football journey at a young age, leaving her hometown at 12 to pursue a professional career. Her early development involved an intensive travel schedule, with her family making regular eight-hour round trips to Sydney and Canberra for her to compete at a high level. This family commitment facilitated her signing with the newly-formed Western Sydney Wanderers as a 15-year-old, marking the beginning of her A-League Women’s career. She later moved to Canberra United, where she earned the “Young Footballer of the Year” award two consecutive times.
Carpenter made her senior international debut for the Matildas on March 2, 2016, at the age of 15, becoming the first player born in the 21st century to represent Australia internationally. Her rapid ascent continued with her selection for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, making her the youngest female footballer to participate in the Olympics. In 2018, she joined Portland Thorns FC, becoming the youngest player in NWSL history to debut. Her club career further progressed with a move to Olympique Lyonnais, one of Europe’s most successful women’s football clubs, where she secured multiple UEFA Women’s Champions League titles. After rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament in 2022, she made a timely return to play in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Her career includes significant participation in major tournaments such as the 2016, 2020, and 2024 Olympic Games, and the 2019 and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cups. She has accumulated 89 caps with 4 goals for the Matildas. In 2025, she transferred to Chelsea FC on a four-year deal, continuing her career in top-tier European football. Carpenter’s achievements include numerous club titles with Olympique Lyonnais and a consistent presence at the highest levels of international football, demonstrating her sustained performance and impact in the sport. She has been recognized for her individual contributions, including being named Australian Women’s Footballer of the Year in 2020-21.
