About

Born Melissa Miller on June 30, 1963, in New York City, Emme spent part of her childhood in Saudi Arabia before returning to the United States to attend Kent School in Connecticut. Overcoming challenges with body image, she pursued higher education at Syracuse University, where she received a full athletic scholarship and became a member of the crew team. Her dedication led her to participate in U.S. Olympic Team trials. After graduating in 1985, Emme initially embarked on a career in journalism, working as a reporter and morning anchor for KNAZ-TV, an NBC affiliate in Flagstaff, Arizona, for two years.

In the 1990s, Emme made a significant shift in her career, entering the fashion industry as a plus-size model. She rapidly gained international recognition, breaking traditional beauty standards. In 1994, and again in 1999, Emme was featured in People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People,” marking the first time a full-figured model received this honor. This achievement solidified her status as a leading and highly compensated model in her field. Throughout her career, Emme has utilized her platform to champion body diversity, collaborating with organizations such as the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) to promote positive body image and inclusive fashion. In 2007, Emme was diagnosed with Stage 2a Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Following surgery and treatment, she was declared cancer-free in November 2007.

Beyond modeling, Emme has expanded her influence as an author, speaker, and designer. She released books such as “True Beauty” and “Morning Has Broken,” sharing personal experiences and promoting self-acceptance. Emme developed sportswear lines, including “me BY EMME” for QVC and the Emme Collection for department stores, offering sizes 2-26. A 16-inch collectible doll bearing her likeness was also created, with proceeds supporting body image and self-esteem initiatives. Her enduring commitment to advocacy and inclusion continues to shape the fashion landscape, inspiring individuals to embrace their authenticity.
