About

Eric Braeden, born Hans-Jörg Gudegast on April 3, 1941, in Bredenbek, Germany, built a distinguished career in film and television. His early life included excelling in track-and-field, culminating in a scholarship to Montana State University after immigrating to the United States. Before gaining widespread recognition as an actor, he worked in diverse roles, including translator, cowhand, and lumber millhand. His talent was first noted in his debut film, “Operation Eichmann” (1961), and he continued to appear in various television shows under his birth name throughout the 1960s.

Braeden’s career trajectory saw a significant turn when he adopted the stage name Eric Braeden, as advised by Universal Pictures, for his leading role in “Colossus: The Forbin Project” (1970). He then became widely known for his portrayal of Captain Hans Dietrich in the World War II series “The Rat Patrol” (1966–1968). His filmography expanded with roles in “Escape from the Planet of the Apes” (1971) and “Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo” (1977). However, his most iconic role began in 1980 as Victor Newman on the CBS soap opera “The Young and the Restless.” Originally a 26-week contract, his portrayal of the self-made business magnate garnered immense popularity, evolving the character into a central figure of the show for over four decades.

Throughout his extensive career, Braeden has been honored with numerous awards, including a Daytime Emmy Award in 1998 for Lead Actor in a Drama Series and multiple Soap Opera Digest Awards. His contributions extend beyond television, with a notable appearance as John Jacob Astor in the blockbuster film “Titanic” (1997). In 2007, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the first German-born actor since Marlene Dietrich to achieve this recognition. In 1991, he was awarded the Federal Medal of Honor from Germany for his positive representation of Germans in America. Braeden also published his autobiography, “I’ll Be Damned: How My Young and Restless Life Led Me to America’s #1 Daytime Drama,” which appeared on best-seller lists.
