Eric D. Thomas was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 3, 1970, and raised in Detroit, Michigan, by a single, teenage mother. He experienced a period of homelessness in Detroit after dropping out of high school. During this time, he was encouraged by a pastor and evangelist team to pursue education. He obtained his G.E.D. and worked at McDonald’s and Olive Garden while attending Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama, where he also met his wife, De-De Mosley. He worked towards his undergraduate degree at Oakwood for twelve years, graduating in 2001. During his time in Huntsville, Thomas established a program aimed at supporting underprivileged youth.
In 2003, Thomas joined Michigan State University (MSU) with a fellowship to pursue an M.A. in K-12 Administration, focusing on Educational Leadership. He worked as an academic advisor, co-developing “The Advantage,” an undergraduate retention program for academically high-risk Black and Latino students. He completed his master’s degree in 2005 and earned a Ph.D. in Education Administration from MSU in 2015. Concurrently, he served as the senior pastor at A Place of Change Ministries (APOC Ministries) in Lansing, Michigan.
As a motivational speaker, Eric Thomas has engaged with collegiate and professional athletes. His speeches have gained popularity on YouTube. He has appeared on Fox News to discuss his work. Portions of his speeches have been sampled in music, including on Disclosure’s 2013 debut album, “Settle,” and on Meek Mill’s 2017 album, “Wins & Losses.” He collaborated again with Disclosure in 2020 on the song “Energy” from their album of the same name.
