Erik Morales

Erik Isaac Morales Elvira, born on September 1, 1976, in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, began his boxing journey at the age of five under the guidance of his father, José Morales. He developed a notable amateur career with a record of 108 wins and 6 losses across 114 fights, securing 11 major titles in Mexico. Morales professionally debuted at 16, quickly rising through the super bantamweight ranks between 1993 and 1997, accumulating 26 wins, 20 by knockout. His early career included victories against Kenny Mitchell and Hector Acero Sánchez, leading to his first world title shot. In September 1997, at 21, Morales claimed his first world championship, defeating WBC Super Bantamweight Champion Daniel Zaragoza via an eleventh-round knockout.

Morales continued to build his legacy by defeating 15 world champions throughout his career, becoming the first Mexico-born boxer to win world championships in four different weight classes: super bantamweight, featherweight, super featherweight, and light welterweight. He is renowned for his classic trilogies against fellow Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera, with their first and third bouts recognized as ‘Fight of the Year’ by The Ring Magazine, and Manny Pacquiao. After retiring from boxing in 2012 with a professional record of 52 wins (36 KOs) and 9 losses, Morales has taken on roles beyond the ring. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2018, solidifying his status as a boxing icon.

Following his boxing career, Morales has served as the chief boxing analyst for FOX Deportes, offering his expert commentary. Additionally, he ventured into politics, being elected to the Chamber of Deputies in Mexico’s 2018 general election to represent Baja California’s 7th district for the National Regeneration Movement (Morena). In this capacity, he served on the legislative body’s committee on sports. Morales also manages the parks and recreation department in Tijuana, donating his salary back to the department to support community initiatives. He has seven children and continues to be an influential figure in both sports and public service.
