Eva Mendes

Eva de la Caridad Méndez was born on March 5, 1974, in Miami, Florida, to Cuban parents. She was raised in Los Angeles by her mother after her parents’ divorce. Her mother worked at Mann’s Chinese Theatre and later for an aerospace company, and her father operated a meat distribution business. Mendes attended Hoover High School and initially pursued marketing at California State University, Northridge, before transitioning to acting studies under coach Ivana Chubbuck. Her acting career began in the late 1990s with roles in B movies such as “Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror” (1998) and “Urban Legends: Final Cut” (2000). A pivotal moment came in 2001 with her role in Antoine Fuqua’s crime thriller “Training Day,” where she played the girlfriend of Denzel Washington’s character. This breakthrough led to more prominent roles in commercially successful films.

Following “Training Day,” Mendes solidified her presence in Hollywood. She co-starred in “All About the Benjamins” (2002), “2 Fast 2 Furious” (2003), and “Once Upon a Time in Mexico” (2003), earning a Teen Choice Awards nomination for the latter. In 2005, she took on the female lead in the hit romantic comedy “Hitch” opposite Will Smith, marking a significant achievement as one of the first minority actors to lead a successful film in the genre. She continued to act in a diverse range of films, including “Ghost Rider” (2007), “We Own the Night” (2007), “The Other Guys” (2010), and “The Place Beyond the Pines” (2012). Her performance in “The Place Beyond the Pines” was praised by Entertainment Weekly as “quietly heartbreaking.”

Beyond her acting career, Mendes has established herself as a notable figure in other endeavors. She has been a model and ambassador for numerous prominent brands, including Calvin Klein, Cartier, Reebok, Pantene, and Magnum ice cream. In 2005, she became an international spokeswoman for Revlon Cosmetics, actively participating in their breast cancer awareness campaigns. Mendes launched her own fashion collection “Eva by Eva Mendes” in 2013 in partnership with New York & Company, and also served as the creative director for CIRCA Beauty, a makeup line sold at Walgreens starting in 2015. After her role in “Lost River” (2014), she retired from the film industry to focus on her family and other business ventures, citing a desire to create her own opportunities.
