About

Gary Leonard Oldman was born on March 21, 1958, in New Cross, London, England. He developed an early interest in acting and trained at Rose Bruford Drama College, where he earned a B.A. in theatre arts in 1979. Before pursuing acting full-time, Oldman worked various jobs, including assembly lines and as a porter. His early career included significant stage work, earning him Time Out’s Fringe Award for Best Newcomer in 1985-1986 and the British Theatre Association’s Drama Magazine Award as Best Actor in 1985 for his role in “The Pope’s Wedding.”

Oldman transitioned to film with his debut in “Remembrance” (1982). His portrayal of Sid Vicious in “Sid and Nancy” (1986) garnered widespread recognition and a BAFTA Best Actor nomination for “Prick Up Your Ears” (1987). Throughout the 1990s, Oldman became known for playing an array of memorable villains, including Lee Harvey Oswald in “JFK” (1991), Count Dracula in “Dracula” (1992), and Norman Stansfield in “Léon: The Professional” (1994). He also expanded his career by writing and directing the film “Nil by Mouth” (1997), which earned him the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film and the BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay.

The 2000s saw Oldman take on prominent roles in major franchises, appearing as Sirius Black in the “Harry Potter” series (2004-2011) and Detective James Gordon in “The Dark Knight” trilogy (2005-2012). His performance as George Smiley in “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2011) earned him his first Academy Award nomination. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2018 for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour” (2017), a role that also earned him a Golden Globe Award, Critics’ Choice Movie Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and BAFTA Award. Further notable performances include Herman Mankiewicz in “Mank” (2020) and Jackson Lamb in the Apple TV+ series “Slow Horses” (2022-present), for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
