Gavin Christopher Newsom was born in San Francisco, California, on October 10, 1967. He overcame challenges in his early life, including dyslexia and financial instability, which instilled in him a strong work ethic and commitment to public service. He graduated from Santa Clara University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in political science. Following his education, Newsom established a business career, founding PlumpJack Group in 1991 with investor Gordon Getty. This boutique winery grew into an enterprise managing 23 businesses, including wineries, restaurants, and hotels, employing over 700 people. His early business endeavors provided him with an annual income exceeding $429,000 between 1996 and 2001, with his business holdings valued at over $6.9 million in 2002.
Newsom entered the political arena in 1996, appointed to San Francisco’s Parking and Traffic Commission by Mayor Willie Brown. The following year, Brown appointed him to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where he became its youngest member at the time. He was subsequently elected for full terms in 1998, 2000, and 2002. As a supervisor, he gained recognition for advocating reforms to the city’s municipal railway and for sponsoring the “Care Not Cash” voter initiative in 2002, which aimed to provide services instead of direct cash aid to the homeless. This initiative significantly raised his political profile, contributing to his successful mayoral bid in 2003.
He served as the 42nd Mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011, during which he gained national attention for directing the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2004, defying state law. His tenure also saw the implementation of Healthy San Francisco in 2007, making it the first U.S. city to offer universal health care. Transitioning to state-level politics, Newsom was elected Lieutenant Governor of California in 2010 and reelected in 2014. As Lieutenant Governor, he hosted “The Gavin Newsom Show” and authored “Citizenville” in 2013, focusing on technology’s role in government. He was elected the 40th Governor of California in 2018 and reelected in 2022, navigating through significant events like the COVID-19 pandemic and an unsuccessful recall effort in 2021. Since 2025, he has also hosted the podcast “This is Gavin Newsom.”
