Gloria Reuben

Gloria Elizabeth Reuben was born on June 9, 1964, in Toronto, Ontario. Her parents were Pearl Avis Mills, a classical singer, and Cyril George Reuben, a civil engineer. Her early life included training in piano, ballet, and jazz at The Royal Conservatory of Music. Reuben’s career began with modeling and television advertisements before she gained significant recognition in the American television series ER. She portrayed Jeanie Boulet, an HIV-positive physician assistant, a role that earned her two Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe nomination. She continued in this role from 1995 to 1999 and returned for an episode in 2008. Her work on ER led to her advocacy for HIV/AIDS awareness.

Reuben’s film career includes notable performances such as Elizabeth Keckley in Steven Spielberg’s 2012 film Lincoln, where she starred alongside Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field. She also appeared in Admission (2013) with Paul Rudd and Tina Fey, and in Reasonable Doubt (2014) opposite Samuel L. Jackson. On television, she has held roles in Raising The Bar, Falling Skies, Marvel TV’s Cloak & Dagger, and City On A Hill. From 2015 to 2019, she played Krista Gordon, a therapist, in the critically acclaimed series Mr. Robot, a role for which Rolling Stone praised her performance in the series finale.

Beyond acting, Reuben has an established music career, including touring as a backup singer for Tina Turner in 2000. She released her first jazz album, Perchance To Dream, in 2015, followed by For All We Know in 2020. Her non-fiction book, My Brothers’ Keeper: Two Brothers. Loved. And Lost., an intimate tribute to her two deceased brothers, was published in November 2019. She is also a known social activist, serving as President of Waterkeeper Alliance from 2020 to 2023 and as a special adviser on climate change for The Climate Reality Project.
