Greta Scacchi was born on February 18, 1960, in Milan, Italy, the daughter of an Italian art dealer and a British dancer. She spent her early years in Milan and Sussex, England. In 1975, she relocated to Perth, Western Australia, with her mother and stepfather, where she attended Hollywood Senior High School and made her theatrical debut with the University Dramatic Society. At 18, Scacchi returned to England to train at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, honing her skills alongside notable contemporaries.

Scacchi’s on-screen career began in 1981 with a role in the TV series “Bergerac,” followed by her film debut in the German film “Second Sight” (1982). Her breakthrough came with the leading role in the 1983 British film “Heat and Dust,” which earned her a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Newcomer to Film. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, she appeared in significant productions such as “White Mischief” (1987), “Presumed Innocent” (1990), and “The Player” (1992). Her role as Alexandra of Hesse in the 1996 television film “Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny” garnered her a Primetime Emmy Award. In 2000, she received the AFI award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the Australian film “Looking for Alibrandi,” further cementing her reputation in international cinema. She also received another Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 2007 for her work in the Western television film “Broken Trail.” Fluent in English, French, German, and Italian, she has been a sought-after talent for diverse European projects. Her extensive theatre work includes performances in “Uncle Vanya,” “A Doll’s House,” and “The Deep Blue Sea.”

Scacchi has continued to build on her impactful career with recent roles in films like “Waiting for the Barbarians” (2019) and “Run Rabbit Run” (2023), and television series such as “Darby and Joan” (2022-present) and “Bodies” (2023). Beyond her acting achievements, Scacchi is an active environmental campaigner, notably supporting Greenpeace and Christian Aid’s climate change initiatives.
