Scott Griffith “Griff” Aldrich is a multifaceted individual who has achieved remarkable success in both the legal and basketball worlds.
After graduating from Hampden-Sydney, where he was team captain and part of two NCAA Tournament squads, Aldrich went on to earn a law degree from the University of Virginia. He then entered the private sector for 16 years, during which time he was a partner at Vinson & Elkins law firm, founded an oil and gas company in Texas, and served as a managing director and chief financial officer at a private investment firm. Despite his success in these fields, Aldrich never lost his passion for basketball. In 2016, Aldrich returned to his alma mater as a coach, joining UMBC’s staff as the director of basketball operations and director of recruiting/program development. He was part of the Retrievers’ historic upset over top-ranked Virginia in the 2018 NCAA tournament. Later that year, he was named the head coach of the Longwood Lancers men’s basketball team, and in his first season, he led the team to its first-ever Division I postseason appearance in the 2019 College Basketball Invitational. In July 2021, Aldrich received a contract extension through 2028, a testament to the impressive job he has done in building the Lancers into a competitive program.
Aldrich’s success on and off the court is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and ability to excel in multiple domains. He has demonstrated that with passion, persistence, and a commitment to excellence, it is possible to achieve great things in both basketball and the legal profession. His impressive resume and accomplishments have made him a highly respected figure in both fields, and he serves as an inspiration to others who strive to excel in multiple areas of their lives.
