Gwilym Lee was born on November 24, 1983, in Bristol, England, to Welsh parents, Tom and Ceinwen. He developed an early interest in drama, joining a drama group as a teenager. His professional acting career began with the television adaptation of “Animal Ark” (1997–1998), where he played James Hunter across 13 episodes. At the age of 16, Lee began working with the Royal Shakespeare Company on “Richard III.” He pursued higher education in English literature at Cardiff University and later trained in drama at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he was awarded the Guildhall Gold Medal in 2008.
Lee’s career has seen a steady progression across varied platforms. He received commendations at the 2008 Ian Charleson Awards for his performance in the National Theatre’s “Oedipus.” In 2009, he appeared as Laertes alongside Jude Law in the Donmar West End season’s “Hamlet.” His notable stage achievements include winning the first prize of the 2011 Ian Charleson Award for his role as Edgar in the Donmar Warehouse’s 2010 “King Lear” production. On television, Lee became widely known for his starring role as DS Charlie Nelson in 15 episodes of “Midsomer Murders” from 2013 to 2016.
A significant milestone in his film career was his portrayal of Queen guitarist Brian May in the critically and commercially successful biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2018). This role earned him a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards. Following this, Lee took on a main cast role as Grigor Dymov in the Hulu series “The Great,” appearing in 30 episodes from 2020 to 2023, which also garnered him a nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series at the 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards. His recent and upcoming projects include roles in “Oddity” (2024), “Here” (2024), and “Top End Bub” (2025), a sequel to “Top End Wedding” (2019) where he reprises his role as Ned Pelton, and the second season of “SAS: Rogue Heroes” (2025), playing Bill Stirling.
